With 700,000 rooms opened each day, Clubhouse can be overwhelming.

And yet, joining Clubhouse back in April has been one of my favorite mind-expanding decisions of 2021.

If you’re thinking of exploring this strange and sprawling audio world in 2022, let this article be a helpful guide.

(For some recent context on the application, check out this Wired piece from late July, 2021, and an earlier post from March 2021.)

Here’s my revised list of the top clubs and people to follow if you’re interested in using clubhouse as an educational and entertaining audio platform to accelerate self-awareness and personal growth.

✋🏼 A Note on the Selection Criteria

I did not include any clubs about NFTs, the metaverse, marketing, VC pitch rooms, music rooms, comedy rooms, current events rooms, politics rooms, social rooms, or rooms dedicated to revolutionizing our education systems.

I did include active clubs connected to psychology, the future of work (and education), philosophy, wellness, culture, leadership and art.

Stylistically, I edged toward conversation-based rooms rather than planned podcast-type show formats. I love clubhouse for the rooms where moderators design certain kinds of experiences and express themselves creatively… where the use of the platform is itself an artistic or philosophical statement.

I most enjoy rooms for their educational impact, their opportunity to practice conversational skill, and for fun…

So these became my criteria:

(1) Opportunities to learn : Rooms that provide ideas and applications from experts in a variety of fields. Intellectual rigor. Careful definitions and context.

(2) Conversational Art, Creativity, and Curiosity : Rooms where moderators honor their guests with artful loving-kindness.

(3) Positive Vibes : Rooms that are fun, enthusiastic, joyous, humorous, playful.

I also wanted to support smaller clubs that will be active into 2022 — or that I really hope will be.

🥁 The Best Clubhouse Clubs 2021–2022

5. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Human Skills // Todd McClees, Greg Satell

Todd McLees and Greg Satell do an exceptional job of curating great guests around human skills in the future of work. “Soft Skills” are really Human Skills — ones that require us to know ourselves and explore what being human actually means. High marks on content-rich opportunities to learn ranking.

4. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wayfinders Club // Joan Ball

Joan P. Ball explores “methods and mindsets we need to navigate flux and create new ways to flourish together in complex and rapidly changing times.” Joan uses her study of service design and consumer behavior to promote the well-being of everyone she talks to. Awesome, encouraging, and supportive space for idea-exploration. High marks on the loving-kindness ranking.

3. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wisdom Workshop // Sean Waters

I’m biased, but I, Sean Waters, created the club to run the kind of educational and experimental rooms wanted to be in: exploratory, random, and supportive of lifelong learners sharing and teaching each other. This club is so good because of the people who come here to learn, or to share what w have learned that might benefit ourselves and others. Fun and funny.

2. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Leaders Guide // Frances Frei, Rebecca Taylor

With Harvard Leadership Professor Frances Frei, weekly rooms Tuesdays at 4pm ET that are a mix of Harvard Case Series and Open Office Hours masterfully moderated by Rebecca Taylor. Feels like sitting in a great office hours session at Harvard with expert leadership and humanity. High ratings on content, skill, and positive vibes.

1. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Citizens of Culture // Maceo Paisley

Maceo Paisley serves up intellectual rigor in inviting, supportive spaces. Great inquiries on “complexity, identity, emotions, perception, interactivity, economics and agency through the lens of contemporary culture.” Highest marks on curiosity and conversational art... and some really great vibes.
